US Quidditch Cup 10: Round 4 Recap

By Jordan Kubichek and Christopher Dewing

In the game that was one of the most anticipated of pool play, Southwest Regional Champions Lone Star Quidditch Club (1-0) delivered West Regional Champions Arizona State University (0-1) its first loss of the season by a score of 200*-90. Arizona State was unable to keep up with the driving forces of Lone Star, who led out of range for almost the entire game. In another battle of the top seeds in a pool, Rochester United (2-0) pulled out a 190*-120 victory over the Lake Erie Elite (0-1), seemingly locking up their path to a top bracket seed. Despite a red card for Lake Erie Elite, the scores remained even for much of the game; only in the final few minutes was Rochester able to pull out of range and catch the snitch for the win.

District of Columbia Quidditch Club (DCQC) (1-0) narrowly defeated Gulf Coast Gumbeaux (1-1) 100*-90. DCQC’s win vaults them right up into the battle for first in the pool, with their match against the Lost Boys looming large. The Ball State Cardinals (2-0) edged out the RIT Dark Marks (0-1) 100*-80, in a Pod 2-Pod 5 battle, it was the lower-seeded team that led at the time of the snitch catch. The game, as well as Ball State’s earlier failure to put away UCLA raises questions about how Ball State might fare in bracket play. The Appalachian Apparators (1-1) were victorious 180*^-120 against Anteater Quidditch (0-1) after they went into overtime. The Apparators were able to catch both snitches to secure the victory to come from behind and claim the win. Penn State (1-0) won a close game 130*-90 over Central Michigan Quidditch Club (1-1) to stay on track for Day Two, while Central Michigan also still has hopes of making bracket play.

The Boise State Abraxans (1-0) now top Pool 7 with a 170*-70 win over the Southern Storm (0-2). Boise State thoroughly outclassed Storm and were comfortably out of snitch range well before the end of the seeker floor. Following their upset victory over the BosNYan Bearsharks, Cal Quidditch (1-1) fell 150*-60 to Bowling Green State University (1-0).
