US Quidditch Cup 10: Round 3 Recap

By Andy Marmer and Christopher Dewing

The 10:20 timeslot featured numerous exciting games as 16 more teams kicked off their US Quidditch Cup 10 campaigns.

RPI Quidditch (1-0) upset Pod 1 Maryland Quidditch (0-1) 120*-100, in a physical back-and-forth affair that saw RPI pull in a close game to seal the victory and position itself firmly as the favorites in Pool 10. In a second Pod 1 vs. Pod 2 contest, it was the Pod 1 team, Texas State University – San Marcos (1-0) defeating Rutgers University Quidditch (0-1) 190*-20. Texas State jumped out to an early lead, but Rutgers was able to tie the score at 80, 22 minutes in. With snitch Gabe Garcez lasting beyond the half-hour mark, Texas State eventually escaped snitch range before making the catch.

The Los Angeles Gambits (1-0) cruised to a 100-40* win over SHSU Quidditch (0-1), but the inability to max out point differential will likely hurt their bracket seeding going into Day Two. Mizzou Quidditch (1-0) found itself in a similar position with a 130*-40 win over the Silver Phoenix (0-1). Although not expected to top their pool, the University of Texas at San Antonio (1-0) also posted a strong scoreline defeating Indiana University Quidditch Club (0-1) 150*-60.

The Warriors (1-0) claimed victory 100*-50 in a hard-fought game over Tufts University Tufflepuffs (0-1). The victory continues the Warriors on their path to qualify for bracket. While a tough loss for Tufts it proves their mettle as a team not to be taken lightly. Oklahoma State snagged a tough victory 120-110* over the Long Beach Funky Quaffles. The game featuring the Pod 3 and Pod 4 teams in the pool is a crucial step for Oklahoma State in trying to get to the second day.

In a low scoring affair, the University of Miami (1-0) won 90*-30  over the Macaulay Honors College Marauders (0-1). Macaulay only managed to score once before the snitch came out and, while they kept it in range, the effort was futile with Miami’s second catch being called good for the victory.
